Answer
Lightning Payroll includes a tax calculator that lets you estimate tax figures without processing a live pay. You can start from a gross amount to see the tax and net pay, or enter a net (take-home) amount and work backwards to find the required gross pay.
In the desktop app
Open the calculator from the menu bar: Tools >> Tax Calculator. A requirement of at least one company being set up in the program must be met before the menu item is enabled.
The Tax Scale panel lets you configure the profile for the calculation:
- Jurisdiction — switch between Australia and New Zealand. The correct fields for each jurisdiction appear automatically.
- Pay Frequency — Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly, or the other available options.
- Financial Year — select the year whose ATO or Inland Revenue tax rates should apply.
- Super % (AU) or KiwiSaver Employee % (NZ) — adjusts the super or KiwiSaver deduction shown in the results.
Australia-specific options (shown when Jurisdiction is set to Australia):
- Tax File Number Supplied?
- Australian Resident?
- Claimed Tax Free Threshold?
- Has STSL (HELP, TSL, etc.) Liability?
- Medicare Exemption
New Zealand-specific options (shown when Jurisdiction is set to New Zealand):
- IRD Number
- NZ Tax Code
- No Declaration (ND)?
- Has Student Loan?
Under Income Details, enter either a Gross Pay amount or a Net Pay amount for the selected pay frequency. The calculator updates the Results panel automatically, showing Gross Pay, Net Pay, Tax (or PAYE), STSL or Student Loan, and the Super or KiwiSaver deduction.
On the Lightning Payroll website
A free public version of the calculator is available at:
- Australia: lightningpayroll.com.au/pay-tax-calculator
- New Zealand: lightningpayroll.co.nz/pay-tax-calculator
In the online (web/mobile) app, go to Tools >> Pay Tax Calculator to open the relevant page in a new tab.
The AU web calculator includes the same tax scale toggles (Tax File Number Supplied, Claimed Tax Free Threshold, Australian Resident, Has STSL Liability), a Pay Frequency selector, Financial Year, Super percentage, and Medicare Levy Exemption. Enter a gross or net pay amount and the results update automatically. A Show Results As dropdown lets you view the figures in a different frequency from the one you entered. You can also click Email Results to have a summary sent to your inbox.
The NZ web calculator works the same way, with fields for Tax Code, KiwiSaver Employee Rate, Has a Student Loan?, pay frequency, and tax year. Results show take-home pay, PAYE, Student Loan, KiwiSaver employee deduction, employer KiwiSaver contribution, and ESCT.
