Answer
Company shifts define the base shift types available in your business. Once created, employees can be linked to a shift, and those shifts can be used to pre-fill pays automatically when running a payroll. For the desktop app, see How Do I Set Up Rostered Shifts in Lightning Payroll Desktop?
Create a Company Shift
- In the online app, go to Company >> Shifts.
- The Shifts screen lists your existing shift types. Click the add button to create a new shift.
- Fill in the shift details:
- Description ÔÇö a name for the shift type, for example “Morning Shift”.
- Start Time and End Time ÔÇö the default start and end times for this shift.
- Break Duration ÔÇö the default unpaid break length.
- Minimum Shift Duration For Break ÔÇö if set, the break only applies when the shift is at least this long.
- Default Pay Rate (Optional) ÔÇö choose Ordinary Time, Time and a half, or Double time as the default rate for this shift.
- Default Allowance (Optional) ÔÇö attach a company allowance to be paid each time this shift is worked.
- Under Employees, select the employees who may be rostered to work this shift.
- Save the shift. The times, pay rate, and allowance set here are defaults only ÔÇö they can be overridden at the employee level or on individual rostered shifts.

Configure Shifts for an Individual Employee
To set pay rates, allowances, and auto-roster repeats specific to an employee, go to Employees >> Shifts. The Shift Settings screen lists every company shift the employee has been linked to. Click the edit button next to a shift to open the Edit Employee Shift screen, where you can configure:
- Pay Rates ÔÇö hourly rates paid once for each hour the shift is worked.
- Allowances ÔÇö allowances paid once each time the shift is worked.
- Repeats ÔÇö days of the week and frequency for automatic rostering.
To remove a shift from an employee, go back to Company >> Shifts, select the shift, and deselect the employee from the Employees list.
Using Shifts in the Roster Planner
Once company shifts and employee links are set up, go to Rosters to view the Roster Planner. Use Reload Repeats to generate auto-rostered shifts for the current pay run based on each employee's repeat settings. Select Edit Shifts to manually add, adjust, or remove individual shifts for the pay run.
