Answer
The online (web/mobile) app lets you file Employment Information (EI) returns to Inland Revenue directly from the pays screen. The process moves through three phases: configure, review, and done.
Step 1 ÔÇö Open the submission screen
- Go to Pays and select the pay run you want to file.
- Click the Payday Filing button on the pay run toolbar.
- Select Submit Employment Information from the menu.

Step 2 ÔÇö Connect to Inland Revenue
A connection banner appears at the top of the screen. If no active session exists, the app will automatically redirect you to the myIR login page. After approving access in your browser, return to the app ÔÇö the banner will show Connected to Inland Revenue once the token is received. You need a connected session before you can file. Step 3 ÔÇö Set filing options
Before preparing the submission, review the available options:
- Processed Date ÔÇö filters which pays are included by their processed date. See What Does The Processed Date Filter Do In Payday Filing?
- Amendment ÔÇö tick this if the return corrects a previously filed submission. An Amend Reason is required when this is selected. See How Do Amendments Work In Payday Filing?
- Final Return ÔÇö tick this if no further Employment Information is expected for this employer.
- Nil Return ÔÇö tick this to file a return with no pay data. See What Do Nil Return And Final Return Mean In Payday Filing?
Select the pays you want to include using the table. All pays for the pay run are pre-selected by default.
Step 4 ÔÇö Review and file
- Click Review & file to prepare the submission draft. The app will validate the data and display a summary of period totals (gross earnings, PAYE, KiwiSaver, ESCT, student loan) alongside the employee count and pay period dates.
- Check the figures. You can click Print submission report to preview or download a PDF of the return before sending.
- If you need to make changes, click Cancel to return to the configure step.
- Once satisfied, click Confirm & send to Inland Revenue. The app transmits the return directly to IR.

After filing
A result banner appears once the return has been transmitted:
- Filed with Inland Revenue ÔÇö the return was accepted. The IR Submission Key and Gateway Return ID are shown for your records.
- Submitted to Inland Revenue ÔÇö awaiting response ÔÇö the return was sent but IR has not yet confirmed it. Do not re-file; check the mailbox shortly to confirm acceptance. See How Do I Use The Payday Filing Mailbox And Retrieve A Return?
- Submission did not complete ÔÇö an error occurred. The error detail is shown. Click Edit and try again to return to the configure step and retry.
